How many of us, really enjoy putting in extra effort in their work and not just be employed for the sake of feeding their families. The inherent feeling of being employed with a company playing a major role in shaping up its business is perhaps something we don’t see much often. The Economic Recession might not have hurt Exports & financial industry, as much as, it has hurt the HRM of the companies in India. You might as well find a well prepared reason of Recession & Economic slump for every trivial thing that happens for a company. For a common man however, the already fierce management practices of the companies have made it even tougher for an employee to survive. The concern emanating from it is something that has been looked up by not many people in the industry as most possibly, no-one considers it a threat to the working conditions for an employee, the inherent feeling of security and growth from a job that is laughed off as fantasy in a country where people are living to earn basic necessities.
We are being taught in the Services Marketing, that even a customer services Rep., working at a meagre 10-12K per month & generating revenue for the company worth in millions, is the face of the company & that when the employee is satisfied and sees a prospective path of growth, he/she doesn’t mind going an extra mile for the client/customer. In a country like India, with stupendous rivalry in the jobs sector, unless you work without saying anything, accepting the plight of the poor working conditions graved with hypocrisy, frustration & political rivalry, the person loses interest to work and generate revenue for the company. The companies, although generating enough profit on their balance sheets and working ahead for expansions in other markets, does not provide the stimulus & recognition required to maintain the drive to keep doing good for the firm. Recession as they call it, is the sole reason for it, while the real earners are the big bosses sitting at the top of the hierarchy. A nation’s competitiveness is determined by the ability of the firms to compete with other international companies. US is a super power as majority of the world class companies who based in the US and employ 80% of the international associates, keeps proper track of employee satisfaction and a complete Bottom-Up Approach where every person has the right to know about things related to them and are given due recognition of their work. Good reviews about the companies also in a way attract FII’s from outside to buy shares and in-turn increase consumer confidence in the company.
One major reason that the author tries to identify about the poor working conditions of the Indian employee is the cashing of the basic need of an Indian to fill the basic necessities of survival in the society that leads to exploitation. Indians do not want to remain aware of their rights and are self contended to who they are and where they are. The Hofstede’s dimension that highlights high power distance parameter for India indicates the working culture of the Indian Society. We need to have powerful social sector reforms & practices from the government to avert the companies using the mere word of Recession in undertaking retrenchments or holding back, due monetary consideration to the deserving employees as an incentive of their hard work. A recent study indicates, that the best employees in an organization leave early, and so there has to be a mechanism for retaining the employee and boosting its morale. Boosting employee morale means that people will take more pride in their work, call in sick less often and be more productive. There should also be a system to oversee the working culture & management practices and a possible grading system where grades would be provided on the basis of the effort being put in. There could perhaps be a system that governs the much needed requirement of reducing the authoritative attitude of the Directors & the CEO’s, thus making India a better place, for the 1st time, to WORK.
